The City of Yonkers announced on Friday, Jan. 19 that it is adding five new fully electric Ford F-150s to its fleet of municipal electric vehicles, making it the largest such municipal fleet in Westchester County…
…the very same day that Ford Motor Co.executives announced a 1,400 job cutback at its F-150 EV manufacturing facility in Michigan due to a fall-off in consumer demand…
…and an increase in production of its highly popular, best-selling, highly efficient internal combustion engine-driven F-150 pickup.
Mayor Mike Spano said in a press release that the city now owns 118 electric and hybrid vehicles. He said additional electric pick-up trucks will be added later this year.
The addition of the vehicles to the city is part of the Yonkers Climate Action Plan, which aims to reduce the city’s greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption and create new jobs, while working to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050.
“These new vehicles will continue to help us navigate the future of Yonkers by reducing our carbon footprint,” Spano said.
“We want to lead the way in Westchester and commit to a greener, more sustainable Yonkers by utilizing the innovative technology available to us.”
Previously, a Consumer Reports survey conducted in late 2023 found that EVs have almost 80 percent more problems than gas-powered vehicles using traditional combustion engines.
The Westchester County Department of Public Works said the Ford F-150 Lightning trucks have an estimated range of 240 miles and can also be used to power tools and appliances, as well as provide backup power in the event of a power outage.
Ford’s cuts to EV production are yet another problem for the Biden administration, which is moving along with EV mandates in an attempt to force the cars on American consumers and automakers. ##
