‘President-elect Trump and Congress need to enact legislation cutting off federal funds… for localities with insane sanctuary laws like New York’ – NY POST Editorial

The latest illegal-migrant atrocity should remove any doubt: It’s beyond time to end sanctuary-city policies in New York.
The appalling heinousness of that atrocity is simply unimaginable, even by Gotham standards.
Police say Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, a Guatemalan illegal migrant, set a sleeping woman ablaze aboard an F train at the Coney Island station, then watched in satisfaction as she burned alive.
A medieval level of savagery — and a predictably sick outcome of woefully misguided policies that have made the city a haven for border jumpers.
Including gangbangers, human traffickers, drug dealers, street thugs and Hannibal-Lecter level psychos like the monster who enflamed this harmless woman minding her business on a subway car.
Why target sanctuary-city rules?

Consider: Zapeta-Calil crossed the border in Arizona and 2018 and was promptly deported (thanks to the policies in place under then-President Donald Trump).
He then re-entered the country and, at some point thereafter, headed for New York, where local policies guarantee shelter, food and other taxpayer-funded aid to migrants and forbid cops from working with ICE to deport even the ones who commit new crimes.
In other words, he went where he’d be most able to do anything and everything he wanted, without much regard for the law or fear of consequences.
Zapeta-Calil is believed to have lived here for more than a year, notching a transit summons in 2023 (strong evidence transit criminals are dangers to society at large).
And here we are today, with a crime so heinous and pointless that not even the most voluble progressive could reasonably excuse or justify policies that block ICE from pursuing criminal migrants.
They will, of course, try — as they twist themselves into pretzels defending the absurd law, expanded under Mayor Bill de Blasio, that requires a conviction before handing migrants over to ICE . . . if ICE happens to ask.
That law has turned the city into a utopia for murderous migrants and a nightmare for their victims and everyone else.
What will it take for the city to rethink such self-destructive lunacy?
Mayor Adams, new NYPD boss Jessica Tisch and the sane members of the council should work as closely as they can with incoming border czar Tom Homan on sending criminal migrants home.
President-elect Trump and Congress need to enact legislation cutting off federal funds, if need be, for localities with insane sanctuary laws like New York.
And everyday New Yorkers across the political spectrum must let their council reps know that their humanitarian playacting appears to have taken yet another human life, in the most atrocious manner possible.
Short of that? Expect ever more carnage. ##
